A Professional's Response to Misleading Messages

Wrong messages regarding my profession will not be tolerated, not by me at least!

A post was suggested to my feed, and as I started reading, I felt relatable. Little did I know that it would have a point (the last one) that would make me write a long comment.

The point was: “Loneliness of the profession as confidentiality does not allow you to process with others”

I wrote a long comment and posted it; however, I also want to share it here to ensure its visibility!

Here it goes:

I believe confidentiality is a decision and a choice made by a professional therapist. It is both a promise and an ethical responsibility, taking the confidentiality clause into account as well.

Loneliness has very little to do with it. It is more about the individual as a human rather than the professional role.

Talking about processing: Yes, there could be times when a professional also finds it difficult. That’s why it is recommended to have a supervisor who can facilitate while maintaining confidentiality!

These are my thoughts, and while I agree with other points mentioned in your post, I sincerely disagree with the last one, which is quoted exactly as presented:

“Loneliness of the profession as confidentiality does not allow you to process with others”

Loneliness is personal! Why generalize it to the entire profession?

We are already dealing with so many generalizations that negatively affect people's mental health—not another one!

I will object when a wrong message is shared about my profession, even if it comes from people senior to me!

A responsible professional,

P.S. I'm not mentioning whose post it was from because after I posted my comment, I saw a comment from someone like me, pointing out that the last point was wrong. And that comment was posted well before mine, and was acknowledged by the creator, yet the post was not updated.

Let me know if I did it right.
